The Artistic Residencies – Individual and Collective Non-Formal Learning (ARICNFL) project aims to promote non-formal learning practices through international artistic residencies. The project involves partners from different European countries, focusing on artistic development, intercultural exchange, and the sharing of good practices.

Casa de Vilar – Associação Cultural e Artística

Casa de Vilar’s role as coordinator of ARICNFL marked a key moment in its development. This first European cooperation experience strengthened its international project management skills and promoted artistic creation while elevating the role of the artist in society.

A participação da Casa de Vilar como coordenadora do projeto ARICNFL representou uma fase marcante para a associação. Esta primeira experiência europeia fortaleceu competências em gestão cultural e redes internacionais, promovendo a criação artística e a valorização do papel do artista na sociedade.

CRL | Circolando

Circolando emphasized the value of residencies as spaces for experimentation and cultural exchange, highlighting Erasmus+ as a powerful engine for artistic freedom and international collaboration.

A CRL reforçou a importância das residências como espaços de intercâmbio e experimentação, destacando o impacto do Erasmus+ no estímulo à liberdade criativa e à colaboração internacional no campo artístico.

Artifactory

Artifactory contributed with expertise in non-formal education and cultural heritage, promoting the inclusion of peripheral artists and intercultural creative practices.

Vedogiovane

Vedogiovane advocates for accessible artist residencies embedded in local dialogue, with strong emphasis on cultural mediation and community interaction.

A Vedogiovane defende residências artísticas acessíveis e abertas ao diálogo com o território, integrando práticas de mediação cultural e aproximação à comunidade.

Action 1 - Artistic Residencies - What?

A roundtable dedicated to Artistic Residencies, fostering joint reflection among partners from Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain. It explores origins, meanings, evolution, and typologies to build a shared and current definition suited to the European context. The discussion gathers experienced professionals from the artistic and cultural fields. This action was led by Casa de Vilar.

Ação 1 - Residências Artísticas - What?

Mesa-redonda sobre o conceito de Residência Artística, promovendo uma reflexão conjunta entre parceiros de diferentes países (Portugal, Itália, Grécia e Espanha). Debate-se a origem, evolução, significados e tipologias, com o objetivo de construir uma definição comum e partilhada, adaptada ao contexto europeu contemporâneo. Envolvem-se profissionais com experiência no setor artístico e cultural. Esta ação foi liderada pela Casa de Vilar.

Action 2 – Artistic Residencies – Why?

Over two days in Italy, the team and guests will discuss the origin, purpose, and evolution of Artistic Residencies. The focus is on their first records, initial and current needs, changes over time, and future perspectives. The aim is to develop a shared language and deepen understanding of residencies in today’s artistic context. This action was led by Vedogiovane.

Ação 2 - Residências Artísticas - Why?

Durante dois dias, em Itália, equipa e convidados debatem a origem, propósito e evolução das Residências Artísticas. Reflete-se sobre o primeiro registo, necessidades iniciais e atuais, mudanças ocorridas e visões para o futuro. A ação visa construir uma linguagem comum e compreender o papel das RA no contexto artístico contemporâneo. Esta ação foi liderada pela Vedogiovane

Action 3 – Artistic Residencies – What 4?

This action focuses on the benefits of Artistic Residencies for both artists and host institutions. It explores purpose, impact, and what distinguishes residencies from other artistic formats like festivals or exhibitions. Acknowledging the overlaps with previous themes, the goal is to clarify motivations and outcomes, while contributing to shared knowledge and good practices around the concept of artistic residencies. This action was led by Artifactory.

Reflexão sobre as mais-valias das Residências Artísticas para artistas e entidades promotoras. Debate-se o propósito, o retorno e o que distingue esta abordagem de outras práticas como festivais ou exposições. Esta ação visa clarificar objetivos, reconhecendo as zonas de sobreposição entre os temas das ações anteriores, e aprofundar a compreensão do impacto e das motivações por detrás das RA, contribuindo para a construção de conhecimento partilhado. Esta ação foi liderada pela Artifactory.

Action 4 – Artistic Residencies – How?

This final action focuses on funding Artistic Residencies. It explores sustainable support for artists, grants, funding sources, and the artist status. For hosting entities, it addresses incentives, funding models, and the balance between financial viability and fair working conditions. The aim is to identify practical solutions to ensure residencies remain accessible, sustainable, and supportive for all involved. This action was led by Circolando.

Ação 4 – Residências Artísticas – How?

Encerrando o ciclo de reuniões, esta ação centra-se no financiamento das Residências Artísticas. Debate-se como apoiar artistas de forma sustentável, bolsas disponíveis, outras formas de financiamento e o estatuto do artista. Para as entidades, discutem-se incentivos, modelos de apoio e equilíbrio entre viabilidade económica e dignidade profissional. Pretende-se encontrar caminhos práticos para tornar as RA sustentáveis e acessíveis. Esta ação foi liderada pela Circolando.

This report presents the key findings of the survey conducted as part of a research project funded by the Erasmus+ programme. The study aimed to examine the role of artistic residencies in individual and collective non-formal learning, particularly among adults. We thank all participants for their valuable contribution to this research.

Este relatório apresenta os principais resultados do inquérito realizado no âmbito do projeto financiado pelo programa Erasmus+. O estudo teve como objetivo analisar o papel das residências artísticas na aprendizagem não formal, individual e coletiva, especialmente entre adultos. Agradecemos a todos os participantes pelo seu contributo essencial para esta investigação.
